Watch: Breathtaking moment a great white shark smashes through a diving cage
British shark diving expert Jimi Partington survived a near-fatal encounter with a great white shark in 2020.
In an attempt to overcome the post-traumatic stress disorder he developed following the incident, he ventured into the depths for a new documentary. But things went horribly wrong when a great white rammed into his cage.

The video is from a new Discovery Shark Week documentary titled Great White Open Ocean.
In the show, Partington, a divemaster and expedition leader with Shark Diving Xperts and Islander Charters in Manchester, UK, goes out into the open sea to see great white sharks up close.
But rather than using a standard wire cage, Partington uses a Perspex box.
In a clip shared to promote the program, Partington can be seen lying in his transparent box, with a large tall white in front of him
Multiple cameras film the encounter and show the five-meter shark circling around and under Partington’s box.
The shark seems curious about the box and what it may contain. It can be seen swimming and touching it, then quickly turning away.
Partington is heard saying, “I’ve had two bumps already now, which seems pretty deliberate.”
Suddenly, in a scene reminiscent of the movie Jaws, the shark swims up, aiming directly for the bottom of the box, and smashes it.
Mouth wide open, he smashes the box to pieces, missing Partington’s body by inches.
The promotional video ends there, but Partington assured viewers that no humans or animals were harmed during the encounter.
“I’ve spent the last decade in the water observing and studying great whites, without incident, so obviously this encounter was quite a surprise!” he says.
“I think the shark was just curious about what I was, which is how they investigate objects by bumping into each other and sometimes biting.
“We see this type of behavior with kayaks, surfboards and even boats.
“I chose to put myself in this position and I was aware of the risks. The good news: I wasn’t hurt and luckily neither was the shark,” Partington told People.
The film’s director and producer, Jeff Kurr, said, “Great White Open Ocean is a film that follows the story of a friend of mine, an expert diver named Jimi Partington. He actually survived being hit from below by a 16-foot great white.
“We were able to film this encounter, and it is probably the most spectacular sequence in the history of Shark Week.
“It’s also miraculous because when Jimi was hit by the shark, he didn’t have a scratch on him. In fact, he had to swim for his life to the boat, but he was fine.
Discovery’s Shark Week is currently airing for US audiences, but Australian dates have yet to be released.
