Unique experiences to try on the KZN South Coast this Easter
This Easter holiday, the #OutdoorsAreIn, which means it’s time to get outside and create unforgettable memories with the family on KZN’s South Coast. Rather than settle for tried and tested holiday experiences, this is the year to try something truly unique in the paradise of the Zulu Kingdom!
“KZN South Coast continues to remain a top vacation destination due to our incredible natural tourism assets. We’ve noticed a growing desire to try something different in the great outdoors, and we’ve adapted a number of tourist experiences to reflect this requirement. In order to minimize the hassle of vacation planning, we have compiled a list that includes 10 of the region’s truly unique sightseeing excursions to try this Easter,” explained Phhelisa Mangcu, CEO of Ugu South Coast Tourism (USCT).
KZN South Coast Agri-CULTURE Tours
Enjoy a rural tourism excursion along the newly launched KZN South Coast Agri-CULTURE tours. Explore the region’s lush subtropical farmland and taste the rich flavors of the KZN South Coast. Taste freshly grown produce, locally brewed coffee, and farm-fresh baked goods on a guided tour of the farming process. Fish, hike, quad or just relax in this rural coastal setting. The tour includes BBS Farm, Animal Farm at B’s Guesthouse, Ubumbano Homestead, Beaver Creek Coffee Estate, Mac Banana and Mpenjati Coffee.
Rickshaw ride experience
Head to beautiful Margate Beach for a unique rickshaw ride along the waterfront. Operated by Nethezeka Tourist Transport and Projects, visitors to Margate Beach can now enjoy a spectacular beachfront tour before to spend a day swimming, surfing or relaxing on the golden sands.
Oribi Vulture Observation Hideout
For a unique wildlife experience, it is worth stopping at the Oribi Vulture Viewing Refuge located near the Oribi Gorge. This is an ecologically significant site where visitors have the rare chance to see endangered Cape vultures congregate to feed, mate and nest in their natural habitat. Nature lovers can have the privilege of seeing this breeding colony of around 150 Cape vultures up close.
Get a taste of local culture through Great Drives Out experiences. This is an authentic rural excursion that takes visitors into the region’s outback for something truly memorable. There’s the KwaXolo Caves Adventures, a mountainside hike along a system of cables and rungs to caves covered in ancient San artwork. The KwaNzimakwe Multi-Trails is a lovely network of trails in the Mpenjati Nature Reserve and just inside Shelly Beach is the Nyandezulu Experience, a guided walk through the Ntantana Mountain. Discover more about local history at the Ntelezi Msani Heritage Centre, a facility that touches on African history, indigenous knowledge, culture and creative arts.

The smallest desert in the world
In Port Edward, near the Wild Coast, visitors will find a number of exciting tourist offerings. One of them is the Red Desert Nature Reserve which, with only 200 meters in diameter, is the smallest desert in the world. The beautiful red soil of this archaeologically significant site contrasts with the green coastal forests and the sparkling blue of the Indian Ocean!
Exciting ocean safaris and diving in marine protected areas
Two of KZN’s southern coast marine protected areas are also world-class dive sites attracting underwater adventurers from all over the world. Aliwal Shoal off Umkomaas and Protea Banks off Shelly Beach were created to support healthy marine ecosystems which now support a wide variety of marine life such as sharks, whales, turtles, rays, kingfish, yellowfin tuna and barracuda. There are several local dive charters for those wishing to go scuba diving, shark cage diving, snorkeling or even snorkeling in these areas, as well as boat charters for those who prefer to stay dry!
Trendy beach club and Shisanyama
Visitors looking for mouth-watering braai meat in a great outdoor setting should stop by Senzi’s Shisanyama in Margate. The restaurant is centrally located and offers customers a great opportunity to sample the local flavor. Head to Oribi Gorge and try one of the many Wild 5 adventures on offer! These range from the adventurous to the extreme, all in one of the most beautiful settings in the region. Vacationers can go rafting, paintballing, quad biking or try the Wild Gorge Swing, which has the tallest swing of its kind at 55 stories! Don’t miss out on the thrilling 80-meter cable suspension bridge, 130 meters above the ground, or take a zipline through the Oribi Gorge.
The South Coast of KZN is a renowned surf destination, home to some of the best surfers and surf instructors in the country, all ready to share their knowledge of the sport. Some of the best surf spots to try are Scottburgh, Umzumbe, Southbroom and St Michael’s-on-sea – although with 58 beaches along the 120km coastal stretch, there are so many spots to try!
