– The from the United Kingdom third largest airline and leading tour operator to many leisure destinations across the Mediterranean and the Canary Islands was appointed to Jet Zero advicethe government’s delivery group for sustainable aviation

– The appointment follows the launch of their sustainability strategy and works with the government Sustainable Aviation Fuel Delivery Group

– Jet2 intends to take advantage of this appointment to demand a reform of the UK Emissions Trading System (UK ETS) and new investments in the development of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (FAS)

Jet2 was nominated by the government to join the Jet Zero advicethe partnership body between industry and government to ensure the decarbonisation of the aviation sector, as part of the launch of the Jet Zero strategy.

The meeting comes later Jet2 initiated its sustainable development strategy by January 2022where it launched one of the largest airline compensation programs in the world, pledged to use sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) by 2026 and pledged to spend billions to purchase up to ‘to 75 new, more efficient Airbus A321neos, which produce around 20% reduction in C02 emissions per seat compared to previous models.

Based at Leeds with more than 9,000 people employed across the UK, Jet2.com is one of the only major airlines headquartered in the North, with ten UK base in operation (Belfast International, birmingham, Bristol, East Midlands, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds–Bradford, Manchester, Newcastle and London Stansted). This appointment brings greater regional representation to the Board and will see Jet2 among those leading the development of sustainable aviation in the North.

The industry body Sustainable Aviation believes that a UK the sustainable aviation fuels industry could create 20,000 jobs in industrial heartlands and £3 billion in revenue (gross value added) for the economy, which Jet2 believes that it offers the possibility of accelerating the “race to the top” and of addressing regional disparities in the UK.

As part of the Council, Jet2 will seek to ask the government to be more transparent about where the money raised under the UK The Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) is being spent, including calling for revenues to be dedicated specifically to decarbonisation policies. EU, as part of its Fit for 55 program, has already pledged to spend its ETS revenue on green policies. The UK earned his own ETS income after leaving the European Union and Jet2 believes it is right to go with the flow.

Especially, Jet2 will strive to both offer and call for greater investment in Sustainable Aviation Fuels. This includes price stability mechanisms and investments that match European and American commitments – the United States has invested $4.3 billion in SAF compared to from the United Kingdom £180 million. This will increase adoption across the industry and boost the potential of SAF to drive job creation, ensuring the UK don’t fall back. Just one year of dues by five UK airlines to UK The ETS scheme (estimated at £290m in 2022 based on current market prices) covers the cost of the government’s existing commitment to SAF. In order to achieve the 10% target mentioned in the Jet Zero Industry Charter, clear government policy and financial support will be required.

Steve Heapygeneral manager of Jet2.com and Jet2holidays said: “We are delighted to have been appointed to the Jet Zero advice today, a move that brings greater regional representation to the body and will enable us to advance our ambition to be one of the leading brands in sustainable air travel and package holidays. Travel and tourism is a force for good, and making it more sustainable is a top priority for us. We have worked closely with the government as members of the SAF delivery group for a time, and become official members of the Jet Zero advice means we can have a bigger voice at the table at this critical time, working with government and industry to ensure we get to net zero as quickly as possible. »
