How three players sold by Chelsea for £ 75million last summer have behaved since leaving

The 2020/21 summer transfer window has been a busy one for Chelsea, especially in terms of income, as the Blues have gotten big in the market.

They spent over £ 220million to bolster then-manager Frank Lampard’s side for a Premier League title tilt as Ben Chilwell, Edouard Mendy, Hakim Ziyech, Kai Havertz and Timo Werner all arrived in West London in significant movements.

Lampard also bolstered his defense by capturing the signing of free agent Thiago Silva after his release from PSG, while Malang Sarr also joined Nice to later be loaned to Porto for the season.

There were also departures. As expected, there were plenty of loan deals for Blues players to leave and join the club’s Loan Army.

Tiemoue Bakayoko, Victor Moses, Davide Zappacosta, Ross Barkley, Michy Batshuayi and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have all joined the exodus of players who are temporarily absent from Stamford Bridge for the season as Lampard puts his house in order.

Not that it went too well for the club’s record scorer, who was sacked by Chelsea in January and replaced by Thomas Tuchel, who went 14 unbeaten games to start his club career.

Last summer Lampard and the club managed to offload three players on permanent deals, so how have they fared since and have Chelsea made a mistake in letting one of them go?

Alvaro Morata

Morata was Chelsea’s all-time record signing when he arrived from Real Madrid with a contract worth around £ 60million and looked like a shrewd buy when he scored seven goals in his first eight games for the club.

However, it didn’t last much longer as the Spain striker suffered injuries and a serious loss of form and confidence. He was eventually loaned to Atletico Madrid, who then signed him for good in July 2020 for an estimated £ 58million.

He has since returned to Juventus on a one-year loan fee with an option to buy permanently for € 45m or extend his one-year loan to € 10m.

The 28-year-old has been in excellent goal form this season for Andrea Pirlo’s side, scoring 16 times in all competitions in 34 appearances and also helped himself with 11 assists.

Mario pasalic

A regular member of the Blues’ loan army, Pasalic spent time in Elche, Monaco, Milan, Spartak Moscow and then Atalanta after joining Chelsea from Hajduk Split in 2014 for £ 3million.

After a successful loan in 2018/19 followed by 12 goals in 45 2019/20 appearances for Atalanta convinced the Italians to spend £ 12.5million on Pasalic to represent a gigantic profit for Chelsea from the midfielder.

Pasalic’s current campaign has been disrupted by injury, but he still made 24 appearances this season, scoring four times.

Nathan

Do you remember Nathan? Be honest … right?

Well, the Brazilian attacking midfielder was sold by Chelsea last summer after failing to make an appearance for them in five years.

Having joined Atletico Paranaense in 2015 for £ 4.5million, hopes were high for Nathan after scoring eight goals in 19 games for the Brazilian youth teams.

Chelsea loaned him to Vitesse Arnhem in Holland for two seasons, but he failed to make a big impact. This led to new loans to Amiens in France and the Portuguese side to Belenenses.

A return to South America has always seemed on the cards and he eventually joined Atletico Mineiro on loan in 2018, where he made 48 appearances in just a few seasons.

Chelsea eventually decided to sell him permanently and Mineiro, who wanted to extend his loan anyway, managed to secure the midfielder’s permanent signing for just £ 3million in July of last year.
