5K on the Beaufort piste
BEAUFORT, SC (WTOC) – Typically you would have planes coming onto the runway on Saturday morning, but those will be runners and walkers during a 5K at Beaufort Executive Airport
The supervisor said they were closing the runway so that no one was struck by an oncoming plane.
“A totally unique experience here,” said airport manager Jon Rembold. “We’re going to start here on the airstrip and then do a sort of tour of the whole airfield. So you walk past the airplane hangars behind me and then you walk the runway completely once almost twice.
This facility only flies private planes, which makes this event easier to set up in Beaufort instead of Hilton Head.
“Much easier to do it here because we just have more control over the airfield, you know, we don’t have to work with commercial airline schedules and that sort of thing. So while we have some coordination to do, it’s certainly a lot easier to do at the general aviation airport, ”said Rembold.
The course is US Track and Field certified, and you can register in person on Saturdays before 8 a.m.
As for the course.
“It’s fast, it’s flat, we expect to see personal bests here,” said Rembold.
It is only the second year that they have run this race, so they said that in the future they would look at the profits towards the aviation charities, but for now they will just go back to the airport and will provide funds for next year’s race.
